What this converter does

It converts in both directions between the Gregorian calendar and the Umm al-Qura Hijri calendar, and reports the weekday, the Islamic month name, and how many days separate the date from today.

The conversion is done by the browser’s own Umm al-Qura calendar implementation rather than by an approximation formula. That matters: the simplified arithmetic conversions circulating online drift by a day either side, and a date is the one thing nobody wants approximately right.

Why the Hijri date moves against the Gregorian one

The Hijri calendar is lunar. Twelve lunar months come to about 354 days, roughly eleven days short of a solar year, so every Hijri date arrives about eleven days earlier in the Gregorian year than it did the year before. Over three decades a Hijri date works its way through every season.

This is why Ramadan moves forward through the Gregorian calendar each year, and why a birthday recorded in Hijri does not keep a fixed Gregorian date.

Umm al-Qura, and why a converter cannot predict Eid

Umm al-Qura is a calculated calendar, used for civil and administrative purposes in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Because it is calculated, a converter can give you any date in it, past or future, exactly.

Religious observance is a separate matter. The start of Ramadan and the dates of Eid are confirmed by actual moon sighting, which can fall a day either side of the calculated date. So this page will tell you precisely which Gregorian day corresponds to 1 Shawwal 1448 in Umm al-Qura — and that is still not a prediction of when Eid will be announced. For that, wait for the official announcement.

Where UAE residents actually need this

Most UAE paperwork runs on Gregorian dates: visas, Emirates ID, tenancy contracts, labour contracts and end-of-service calculations. The Hijri date matters in a few specific places.

Zakat falls due after a full lunar year, so a zakat date anchored to the Gregorian calendar slowly skips payments. Public holidays for Islamic occasions are set by Hijri date and announced close to the time. And older documents and certificates from some countries carry Hijri dates of birth that have to be converted for a UAE application.

Worked examples

Gregorian → Hijri

Pick any date and the converter returns the Hijri day, month name and year, plus the weekday.

Hijri → Gregorian

Enter 1 Ramadan of a Hijri year to see the Gregorian day it falls on in the Umm al-Qura calendar — the calculated date, not the sighting-confirmed one.

The eleven-day drift

Convert the same Hijri date in two consecutive years and the Gregorian results sit about eleven days apart.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose which way you are converting.
  2. For Gregorian to Hijri, pick the date in the date field.
  3. For Hijri to Gregorian, enter the Hijri year, pick the month and enter the day.
  4. Press Calculate to see the converted date, the weekday and the gap from today.
  5. Remember that for Ramadan and Eid the calculated date is not the announced date — moon sighting decides that.

Frequently asked questions

What is today’s Hijri date?

Leave the direction on Gregorian to Hijri with today’s date in the field and press Calculate. The page converts using the browser’s Umm al-Qura calendar, the one used for civil purposes in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

How do I convert a Hijri date to Gregorian?

Switch the direction to Hijri to Gregorian, enter the Hijri year, choose the month from the list and enter the day. The result gives the Gregorian date and the weekday.

Why is the Hijri year not 2026 minus 622?

Because the Hijri calendar is lunar and its year is about eleven days shorter than the Gregorian one. The gap between the two year numbers therefore narrows over time rather than staying fixed, so simple subtraction gives the wrong answer.

Which Hijri calendar does this use?

Umm al-Qura, through the browser’s own implementation of it. It is the calculated calendar used for civil and administrative purposes in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Other calculated and observational variants exist and can differ by a day.

Can this tell me when Eid or Ramadan will be?

It can tell you the calculated Umm al-Qura date exactly, but that is not the same as the announced date. The beginning of Ramadan and the dates of Eid are confirmed by moon sighting and can fall a day either side of the calculated date, so wait for the official announcement.

How many days are in a Hijri month?

Either 29 or 30, following the lunar cycle, which is why a Hijri year runs about 354 days rather than 365.

Does the UAE use Hijri or Gregorian dates officially?

Both, in different places. Day-to-day administration, visas, Emirates ID and employment contracts run on Gregorian dates, while Islamic public holidays and religious obligations are set by the Hijri calendar.

Do you store my numbers?

No. Calculations run in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. See our Privacy Policy for analytics and AdSense cookie details.

Where these figures come from

The conversion is not performed from a table or an approximation formula. It uses the browser’s own Umm al-Qura calendar, through the standard Intl.DateTimeFormat interface with the islamic-umalqura calendar identifier — the same implementation the operating system uses, maintained as part of the Unicode locale data rather than by this site. Converting the other way is done by searching for the Gregorian day whose Umm al-Qura rendering matches the Hijri date you entered, so both directions use one source of truth and cannot disagree with each other.

That means there is no rate, table or published figure here to go stale. It also means the page inherits the Umm al-Qura calendar’s own scope: it is a calculated civil calendar, not an observational one. Islamic holiday dates in the UAE are confirmed by moon sighting and are announced by the authorities close to the time, so a calculated date is not an announcement.
