What the renewal costs

Why quoted prices vary so much
Search for this and you will find everything from AED 370 to AED 1,200. Both can be honest, because they are counting different things.
The RTA charge alone for a light private vehicle is around AED 370 — a renewal fee of AED 350 plus AED 10 knowledge and AED 10 innovation. That is the number people mean when they say renewal is cheap.
The actual cost of getting it done adds a technical inspection if the car is three years or older, and an insurance policy, which you cannot renew without and which usually dwarfs everything else. Add any outstanding fines, since the RTA will not renew until they are cleared.
So the honest answer is a range, and which end you land on depends mostly on your insurance premium and your car’s age.
The inspection, and when you can skip it
Cars three years old or older need a technical inspection before renewal. New vehicles are commonly exempt for their first three years, which is why the first couple of renewals feel cheap and the third does not.
Reported inspection costs run from about AED 120 to AED 170 for a light vehicle. If the car fails, you pay to fix the fault and re-test, which is the one line here that can escalate without warning.
The grace period, and what it costs to miss it
The mulkiya is valid for twelve months, and the RTA allows a 30-day grace period after expiry to renew without penalty. Past that, a monthly late charge applies — reported at AED 25 by some sources and AED 35 by others.
Separately, driving on an expired registration is reported to carry a AED 500 fine and black points if you are stopped. That is a different and much larger risk than the renewal charge itself, and it is the reason to deal with it rather than let it drift.
Insurance is the line that actually decides the total
Insurance is not an RTA fee and the RTA does not set it, but you cannot complete the renewal without a valid policy. Premiums vary enormously with the car, your claims history and whether you take comprehensive or third-party cover.
One detail worth knowing: the policy generally needs to remain valid for a period beyond the renewal date rather than expiring alongside it, so renewing both in the same week can create a gap. Check the required validity with your insurer before you book the renewal.
If your policy is already paid and in date, set the insurance field to zero — then the figure you get is the marginal cost of the renewal itself.
Worked examples
AED 350 + 20 = AED 370. No inspection, no new premium. This is the cheap case people quote.
AED 370 + about 170 = AED 540 before insurance.
About AED 2,040 all in — and roughly three quarters of it is insurance, not the RTA.
Add about AED 90 in late charges, plus the risk of a AED 500 fine if stopped meanwhile.
How to use this calculator
- Leave the RTA renewal fee at AED 350 unless the Dubai Drive app quotes you differently.
- Say whether the car is three years or older, which decides the inspection.
- Enter your insurance premium, or zero if the policy is already paid and in date.
- Add months overdue if you are past the 30-day grace period.
- Add any outstanding fines, since the renewal will not go through until they are cleared.
- Compare the RTA-only subtotal with the all-in figure before budgeting.
- Confirm the current fee in the Dubai Drive app or on rta.ae before paying.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to renew car registration in Dubai?
The RTA charge for a light private vehicle is about AED 370 — a AED 350 renewal fee plus AED 10 knowledge and AED 10 innovation fees. Add roughly AED 120 to 170 for a technical inspection if the car is three years or older, and your insurance premium, which is required and usually the largest line.
Do I need a test to renew my mulkiya?
Only if the vehicle is three years old or older. New cars are commonly exempt from technical inspection for their first three years, which is why early renewals cost less.
What is the grace period for car registration renewal in Dubai?
Thirty days after expiry, during which you can renew without a late charge. After that a monthly charge applies, reported at AED 25 to 35 a month.
What happens if I drive with an expired registration?
Driving on an expired mulkiya is reported to carry a AED 500 fine and black points. That is far larger than the late renewal charge, so the risk of delay is the fine rather than the fee.
Is insurance included in the renewal fee?
No. Insurance is a separate cost paid to an insurer, not to the RTA, but you cannot renew without a valid policy. It is usually the biggest single line in the total.
Can I renew my car registration online in Dubai?
Yes — through the RTA website, the Dubai Drive app, smart kiosks or a vehicle testing centre. Fines must be cleared and, where required, the inspection completed first.
Why do different websites quote different renewal fees?
Because they count different things. Some quote the RTA fee alone, some add the inspection, some add insurance. The base fee itself is also reported variously as AED 350, 380 and 390. Every figure on this page is an editable input for that reason — put your own quoted numbers in.
Do you store my numbers?
No. Calculations run in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. See our Privacy Policy for analytics and AdSense cookie details.
Where these figures come from
These figures are reported, not transcribed. We were not able to open an official RTA fee schedule, so every number here comes from UAE motoring and insurance guides and they do not fully agree. The most common figure for a light private vehicle is a AED 350 renewal fee plus AED 10 knowledge and AED 10 innovation, about AED 370 in total; other guides give AED 380 and AED 390 for the base fee. The technical inspection for vehicles three years and older is reported between about AED 120 and 170, the grace period at 30 days, and the monthly late charge at AED 25 by some sources and AED 35 by others. A AED 500 fine for driving on an expired registration is reported consistently.
Because of that spread, every component on this page is an editable input rather than a fixed constant. Insurance is included because you cannot renew without it, but it is an insurer’s charge, not an RTA fee, and it is set by your own risk profile.
